The beaches in Tulum are accessed from one of 2 beach roads depending on which are of the beach you wish to visit. The original beach road (Carreterra Tulum- Boca Paila) which runs next to the supermarket is best for accessing the beach from the entrance in the Tulum National Park zone. While the new beach road (called Avenida Kukulcan) is nearest to the house and gives you access to the south section of the hotel strip road. The section of the beach road that runs along side the sea just behind the hotels is very busy with tourists on foot, bikes and mopeds on a narrow road. So take care as it can get busy at times.
Parking is the other major issue if you have a hire car. Some hotels have their own parking, there is private paid for parking (usually $200 mx pesos/ $10 usd per day) and there is some public parking. But careful parking on the road is only possible if you make sure the car is not touching the tarmac (there is an area of un tarmac, sand road on the side) which in the busy parts of the road near Tulum ruins is almost imposible. If you car is touching the tarmac In the protected zone and around PPP (see map) this is possible but be careful they are very hot on towing cars and then you have to pay a “fee” to have your car released. Or relax and cycle to the beach.
