Yucatan (the state that Tulum is in) is made of sandstone which is porous. This means all the rainwater runs through a huge network of underground rivers. Cenotes are sink holes where these rivers are exposed to the land and are surrounded by jungle. This makes them great places to swim in these fresh cool waters and meet the unique creatures that inhabit these eco-systems. The Mayas believed they were gateways to the underworld. Cenotes are usually cool, crystal-clear water, sometimes you can see fish, turtles and if there are in a cave, you can see bats flying overhead. Make sure you have a shower before going in to get rid of any sun cream and protect the local flora and fauna.
It has crystal-clear water, two high platforms for jumping in and a swing rope. This is our favorite Cenote, not just because it is so clean and unspoiled but also because it is no busy. Somedays you feel like you got the whole place to yourself. The locals have a little store where you can get snacks, drinks and fresh cut fruit. It is like a well-kept secret, please don’t tell anyone.
It is probably the most famous and popular cenote in Tulum, for this reason it is expensive and can get very busy. For the price of the entrance, you will get a snorkel, mask and life vest. It is beautiful if you don’t mind sharing it with other people. You can see turtles, fish and bats as it has a big cave you can swim right through. It also has a green area where you can put your towels down and sunbath or have a picnic.
It has several cenotes you can swim and explore; some are through a cave, some are open air but quite big and all very beautiful. You must go through with a group and a guide. You can purchase a ticket with different options, just cenotes or you can also include the zip line and other activities available in the park.
