Cancun airport is very well service from most countries.  On arrival you will find it can be quite a noisy airport.  As a family of 4 and we always rent a car, because it makes it easier to visit places around Tulum and is very helpful for the grocery shopping.  Make sure you hire a car from an internationally known company, because there are some less reliable local companies that offer what seems like a great deal until you actual go to collect the car. When you leave the baggage hall, the hire car desks are imminently in from of you.  National-Enterprise car rental is our company of choice from Cancun airport.

Another option is to organize a transfer from Cancun airport to Casa London via local transfer services. If this sounds tricky, I can help organize this for you. 

Once in Tulum, bicycles and scooters are very popular and can be a good option for local travel. And taxis can be used to go to visit places further a field. Tulum is totally flat and has good cycle lines in some places, local and expats in Tulum often cycle. 

For families I would recommend to rent a car, as this option gives the flexibility and freedom to go to places that it would be too far for the whole family to cycle to, but it depends on how old the kids are. 

Bicycles and scooters can be a great option too, as you don't have to worry about traffic or parking when you go to the beach.
