Chedrahui (pronounced like che-dra-wee) is the main supermarket in Tulum. Here you can get everything you would expect from a supermarket in the US or Canada. But the fruit and vegetables section remind you that you are in the tropics. Look at the size of the watermelons, mangos and pineapples! You can buy local environmentally friendly Tulum craft beer, huge T-bone steaks and Argentinian style sausages. Perfect for the BBQ.
Around the town square and along the main road across Tulum there is a huge variety of different small local shops that sell everything from local hand crafts, types of tequilas, mexcal (a variant of tequila), works in leather, pottery, wood, and your usual souvenirs and trinkets. Inter mixed with these shops are bars and restaurants where you can rest and recovery your energies. Also in the center of town you will find the town square and a local church which on special occasions has local tribal dancing. On the weekends, the street behind the town square has proper Mexican street food which is for locals and tourists alike, so careful with the salsa. As a Mexican I can tell you this is the real deal and is repeated across Mexico. Of course, for the sweat of tooth there are freshly made Churrros that you can dip on melted mexican chocolate, our kids love them.
